TIGER GOLFERS FINISH THIRD AT VA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

 

RICHMOND, VA (October 18, 2004)—The Hampden-Sydney College golf team finished in third-place with a two-day team score of 606 in the 2004 Division III Virginia State Golf Championship at Independence Golf Club Monday.  Junior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) paced the team with a fourth-place finish overall after rounds of 71 and 77 (148). 

Kelly was followed by sophomore Andrew Mitakides (Dayton, OH/Centerville) who finished in fifth-place at 149 after rounds of 73 and 76.  Three freshmen followed Mitakides, led by Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) in 11th-place at 152 (79-73), Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) in 18th at 157 (80-77) and Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) in 19th at 158 (81-77).

Washington and Lee University won the 12-team event with a two-day total of 595.  The Generals were followed by Randolph-Macon (599), Hampden-Sydney (606), Bridgewater (610), Ferrum (642), Christopher Newport (644), Virginia Wesleyan (656), Roanoke (659), Lynchburg (666), Marymount (686), Apprentice (695) and Shenandoah (695).

Hampden-Sydney’s golf team returns to action Saturday, October 23, as the Tigers participate in the Ted Keller Invitational, hosted by Randolph-Macon College, at Hunting Hawk Golf Course in Richmond, VA.
