TIGER GOLFERS FINISH FIFTH IN ODAC TOURNAMENT

Boykin, Kelly Named All-ODAC

LAUREL FORK, VA (April 24, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s golf team finished the 2005 season with a fifth-place finish in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament at the Olde Mill Resort.  The Tigers’ recorded a two day team score of 656, while freshman Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) paced the squad with a fifth-place finish en route to earning all-tournament honors. 

Combs battled through the cold, windy conditions to shoot rounds of 77 and 80, finishing at 157, four shots off the lead.  Junior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) finished 21st at 167 (83-84), while freshman Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) finished in 22nd at 168 (90-78).  Sophomore Andrew Mitakides (Dayton, OH/Centreville) and freshmen Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) and Matt Treacy (Ashland, VA/Patrick Henry) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers as Mitakides finished 23rd at 169 (83-86), Boykin finished 34th at 174 (85-89) and Treacy finished 42nd at 178 (90-88). 

Randolph-Macon won the tournament with a team score of 628, four strokes better than Washington and Lee at 632.  Meanwhile, Guilford finished third at 635 followed by Bridgewater (655), Hampden-Sydney (656), Lynchburg (681), Virginia Wesleyan (688), Roanoke (689) and Emory and Henry (752).  Randolph-Macon’s Blake Smith won the medalist honors with rounds of 74 and 79 to finish at 153. 

For their efforts throughout the season, Bob Boykin was selected first team All-ODAC, while Mike Kelly earned second team honors.  Boykin paced the Tigers with a 76.7 stroke average during the season, had six top-20 finishes and earned medalist honors at the Longwood Invitational.  Kelly was second behind Boykin with a 77.1 stroke average while he also scored six top-20 finishes and had a season best finish of third-place in the Tom Kinder/Bridgewater Invitational. 

Hampden-Sydney finishes the 2004-05 campaign with six top-five finishes in nine events, including a victory in the season opening Tom Kinder/Bridgewater invitational.  The Tigers return eight letterwinners in 2005-06, including all six competitors from the ODAC Tournament.
