TIGER GOLFERS OPEN SPRING WITH SECOND-PLACE FINISH

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, VA (March 7, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney College sophomore Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) finished in a tie for third-place individually to lead the Tiger golf team to a second-place finish at the 2006 Smith Mountain Lake Intercollegiate at par 71 layout at the Water’s Edge Golf Course.  Shrader’s finish led a trio of Tigers in the top-20.

Shrader fired an opening round 74 on Monday, good enough for a second-place standing, then rounded out the tournament with an 81 to finish at 155 for the two round event.  Fellow sophomore Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) finished at 157 after rounds of 79 and 78 to finish in fifth-place, while sophomore Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) finished tied for 19th-place at 165 (82-83).

Sophomore Andrew Gibbs (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) and senior Nathan Huff (Indiatlantic, FL/Cocoa Beach) wrapped up the scoring for the Tigers as Gibbs finished 22nd at 167 (79-88), while Huff was 29th at 173 (93-80).

Liberty University’s “B” team captured overall honors at the nine team event as the Flames finished with a two-day team score of 627, followed by Hampden-Sydney at 636, Lynchburg (650), Apprentice School (651), Ferrum (657), Shenandoah (661), Roanoke (686) and Wisconsin Lutheran (744).  Emory and Henry did not have the required five competitors to record a team score for the tournament.  Meanwhile, Apprentice’s B.J. Maben won individual medalist honors after rounds of 72 and 77 to finish at 149.

The Tiger golfers return to action March 24-25 as they travel to Jekyll Island, GA, to compete in the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate at the Oleander Course.
