COMBS LEADS GOLFERS TO TOP-15 FINISH AT JEKYLL ISLAND JEKYLL ISLAND, GA (March 26, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney sophomore Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) finished in 18th-place individually to pace the Tiger golf team to a 15th-place finish in the 24-team Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational played at the par 72, 6,521-yard layout. Combs’ strong play helped lead the Tigers past Division-I affiliate Harvard, former national champion Averett and Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Roanoke. Combs finished with a three-day total of 223 (72-76-75) as he was the only Tiger to shoot in the 70s in all three rounds. Sophomore Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) followed Combs in scoring for the Tigers with a 48th-place finish at 234 (74-78-82). Sophomore Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) finished 76th at 240 (76-82-82), while sophomore Andrew Gibbs (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) finished at 247 (79-85-83) and senior Nathan Huff (Indiatlantic, FL/Cocoa Beach) at 269 (89-97-83). Methodist College senior Adam Horton won individual medalist honors with a three day score of 211 and rounds of 69, 72 and 70. Horton led the Monarchs to a first-place finish in the event with a team score of 866. The Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational is one of the top tournaments played in the south annually. The 2006 event featured six teams that finished in the top-11 in the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championship, including first-place Methodist, second-place Otterbein, third-place Huntingdon, fourth-place Oglethorpe, sixth-place Greensboro and tenth-place Emory. Hampden-Sydney’s golf team returns to the links Friday, March 31, as the team travels to Camp Lejune, NC, to participate in the Camp Lejune Invitational at Paradise Point Golf Course. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
