TIGER GOLFERS FINISH 15TH AT TOM O’BRIANT MEMORIAL

GREENSBORO, NC (September 27, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s golf team finished 15th in the 18-team Tom O’Briant Memorial Golf Tournament Tuesday at the Par 70, 6,671-yard, Cardinal Golf and Country Club.  Sophomore’s Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox), Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) all tied for 36th-place individually to lead the way for the Tigers. 

Boykin (78-74), Combs (77-75), and Shrader (77-75) all finished at 152 after two rounds at the Pete Dye designed layout.  The trio was followed by sophomore Andrew Gibbs (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) and senior Doug LaBrosse (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) who finished at 167 and 170 respectively playing in their first collegiate golf tournament. 

Methodist College won the event for the third straight season as the Monarchs posted a two-day team score of 581 (288-293), while Oglethorpe (585), Huntingdon (587), Guilford (591) and Emory (593) rounded out the top five.  Methodist’s Cory Schneider captured medalist honors with a even-par score of 140 after rounds of 71 and 69. 

Finishing sixth-through-18th were Pfeiffer “B” (594), LaGrange (600), Duke “B” (601), Wesley (601), Rhodes (601), Christopher Newport (607), Randolph-Macon (616), Greensboro (618), Guilford “B” (618), Hampden-Sydney (619), Washington and Lee (622), Averett (628) and Lynchburg (653). 

This year's event featured nine of NCAA Division III's top-25 teams, according to the September 22 Bridgestone/Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) poll, including six of the top-10 squads.  

Five of Division III's last seven national champions were also in the field. In addition to top-ranked Guilford, second-ranked Methodist, fifth-ranked Greensboro and number-eight Emory make this one of Division III's top fall tournaments. Sixth-ranked Oglethorpe has finished second in three of the last four O'Briant Memorials. Huntingdon is the nation's ninth-ranked team in the poll. 

Hampden-Sydney’s golf team returns to action returns to action October 16-17, in Ruther Glen, VA, at the Virginia Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
