TIGER GOLFERS SCORE SECOND WIN

AMHERST, VA (October 10, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s golf team scored its second win of the fall season Monday as the Tigers won the Lynchburg Invitational at the Par 72, 7,059-yard, Poplar Grove Golf Course.  The Tigers’ “A” team out-gunned six other squads, including Liberty University, with a one day team score of 304. 

Sophomore Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) shot an even par 72 to pace the Tigers while he finished one shot out of medalist contention as Liberty’s Nathan Schenz-Davis scored top individual honors with a one-under 71.  Meanwhile, senior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) and sophomore Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) finished fifth and sixth overall with rounds of 75 and 76 respectively. 

The Tigers’ “A” team was rounded out by sophomores Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) and Andrew Gibbs in 12th and 14th respectively after rounds of 81 and 82.  The Tiger “B” team consisted of seniors Nathan Huff (Indiatlantic, FL/Cocoa Beach) and Doug LaBrosse (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) at 83 and 85, while sophomore Matt Treacy (Ashland, VA/Patrick Henry) also finished at 85 and freshmen Richard Adams (Great Falls, VA/Heights School) and Brandon Clapp (Bristol, TN/Tennessee) at 85 and 87. 

Hampden-Sydney’s team score of 304 was three shots better than Liberty, which finished at 307.  The Flames were followed by Lynchburg (323), Shenandoah (329), Lynchburg “B” (336), Hampden-Sydney “B” (338) and Roanoke (342).  The Tiger golf team will vie for its third victory in its final fall match of 2005 as the squad travels to Ruther Glen, VA, to participate in the Virginia Intercollegiate Championship at Mattaponi Springs Golf Course.
