BOYKIN PACES TIGERS TO THIRD-PLACE FINISH AT VA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RUTHER GLEN, VA (October 17, 2005)—Sophomore Bob Boykin (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) finished in third-place individually to lead the Hampden-Sydney golf team to a third-place finish in the 2005 Virginia State Division III Golf Championship at Mattaponi Springs Golf Club. The result is the team’s third top-three finish in four fall events. Boykin finished with a two-day score of 153 (75-78), two shots shy of tying Washington and Lee’s Nathaniel James and Christopher Newport’s Ryan Patrick at the top of the standings at 151. Senior Mike Kelly (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) finished in eighth-place at 158 (81-77), while sophomore Nick Combs (Newport News, VA/Menchville) gave the team three individuals in the top-ten with a ninth-place result at 159 (80-79). Sophomores Andrew Gibbs (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) and Rob Shrader (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers as Gibbs finished at 171 (83-88), while Shrader came in at 176 (89-87). Washington and Lee’s Nathaniel James won the tie-breaker to score medalist honors as he led the Generals to a first-place finish overall with a team score of 625 (322-303). Randolph-Macon finished second at 632 (320-312), followed by Hampden-Sydney at 640 (319-321), Christopher Newport at 646 (321-325), Bridgewater at 352 (334-318), Ferrum (334-337) and Apprentice (338-333) at 671, Lynchburg at 677 (332-345), Roanoke at 680 (340-340), Shenandoah at 691 (354-337), Virginia Wesleyan at 692 (341-351) and Marymount at 698 (358-340). Having completed its fall season, Hampden-Sydney’s golf team will return to action March 6-7, 2006, when the team will travel to Smith Mountain Lake, VA, for the Smith Mountain Lake Invitational. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
