TIGER GOLFERS FINISH SEVENTH IN H-SC INVITATIONAL Freshman Ronnie Fultz leads the way for Tigers in inaugural event at The Manor FARMVILLE, VA (October 7, 2008)--Hampden-Sydney freshman Ronnie Fultz (Fieldale, VA/Carlisle School) compiled a two-day total of 160 (77-83) to lead the Tiger golf team to a seventh-place finish at the First Annual Hampden-Sydney Golf Invitational hosted by The Manor Resort. In a tournament that saw a rash of high scores, Fultz opened strong with a first round 77 on Monday and closed the event with a final round 83 to seal the top score amongst his teammates. Senior Richard Adams (Great Falls, VA/Heights School) shot a final round 78 to finish with a two-day total of 161 (83-78), ranking 23rd in the final individual standings. Britt Parnell (Midlothian, VA/Trinity Episcopal) turned in a consistent performance that landed him in the top-half of the field. Parnell fired an 80 in round one and followed that up with a final round 83 for a two-day total of 163 and a 29th-place finish. Sam Wallace (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) and Josh Bascom (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) rounded out the Hampden-Sydney "A" team with two-day totals of 166 and 168, respectively. Nick Stubbe (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Chason Trahan (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) were rock solid for the Tigers' "B" unit, each placing in a tie for 23rd position with totals of 161. Stubbe fired a team-low 76 on day two of the tournament. Eric Rutherford (Charlottesville, VA/Menchville), Michael Dowd (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) and Jack Johnston (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle School) closed out the Hampden-Sydney scoring with respective scores of 175, 178 and 189. Christopher Newport University claimed the team title by ten strokes with a two-day team total of 616. Just ten strokes separated the second and fifth-place squads, with Averett University (626), Washington and Lee University (628), Randolph-Macon College (633) and Roanoke College (636) rounding out the top-five. Christopher Newport's Matt Wagner captured medalist honors with a three-over, 148 over the two-day event; his opening round 73 was tied for the best round of the entire tournament. Wagner finished two strokes ahead of Washington and Lee's Robert Womble, who fired a five-over 150. The Tigers will be back on the links Sunday and Monday, October 12-13 as they participate in the Virginia State Intercollegiate at Mattaponi Springs Golf Club in Ruther Glen, Virginia. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
