LAX TIGERS ROAR PAST ST. MARY’S, 14-6 ST. MARY’S, MD (March 5, 2005)—Senior Sean McChesney (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield) and sophomore Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb) each scored three goals, while sophomore attack Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TN/Plano) added two goals and two assists in leading 14th-ranked Hampden-Sydney to a 14-6 victory over St. Mary’s College Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers move to 2-0 on the young season, while the Seahawks fall to 1-3. Jennings got things started for the Tigers with an unassisted strike at the 12:27 mark of the first quarter. St. Mary’s Stu Wright tied the game four minutes later, but it would be the only tie of the contest. At the 7:12 mark of the first quarter, Harrington nailed his first goal to start a 6-0 Tiger run that featured a pair of McChesney goals, along with blasts from sophomore Michael Via (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) and juniors Vince Smith (Palmyra, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield) and Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, GA/McCallie). St. Mary’s got on the board again late in the second quarter with two man-up goals at Pat Donovan and Cyrus Albertson each connected in the final 66 seconds to make it a 7-3 Tiger advantage at halftime. Shane Baxter started the scoring for St. Mary’s in the second half, cutting the H-SC lead to 7-4 before Ryan Harrington and Sean McChesney each tallied goals. A Shane Baxter goal for the Seahawks with 1:37 left in the third held the Tigers at bay momentarily at 9-5. Thomas Jennings’ second goal started another Tiger blitz as the squad reeled off five straight goals, including scoring blasts from William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s), Michael Via, Eamon Thornton and another from Jennings, coming at the 5:52 mark of the fourth quarter to give H-SC a 14-5 advantage. Shane Baxter’s third goal of the second half made the final advantage 14-6 for the Tigers, who out-shot St. Mary’s, 28-27. Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper Jeremy Bull (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) had seven saves in picking up his second win of the year between the pipes for the Tigers, while senior midfielder Ryan Fassnacht (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) won 12-of-16 face-offs. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 9, as the team travels to College Park, MD, to take on Haverford College in a neutral site matchup starting at 6:30 pm.
