MARY WASHINGTON UPSETS 12th-RANKED LACROSSE TIGERS, 10-9 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Lax.com’s twelfth ranked
Hampden-Sydney Tigers opened their 2006 season with a stunning 10-9 loss at the
hands of the Mary Washington Eagles. The landmark victory for Mary Washington
marks the first-ever win over the Tigers. Junior midfielder William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens) scored two first half goals for the Tigers while junior midfielder Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) and senior tri-captain Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, GA/McCallie School) added one goal a piece. Shell’s performance was matched by Sean Brown of Mary Washington as he also deposited two goals in the first half. In the third quarter, both teams scored twice, as fellow
St. Anne’s-Belfield graduates, Kelly Mattie and Vince Smith found
the net to keep pace with the Eagles. Senior tri-captain Vince Smith would
finish the game as the offensive stand out for Hampden-Sydney as he scored one
goal and had four assists. Mary Washington (1-0) will host Villa Julie College on Wednesday at 3 pm. The Tigers (0-1) next contest is against Haverford at a neutral site in Alexandria, VA (St. Stephen’s School) on March 4th at 1:00 pm.
