SALEM, VA (April 4, 2009)—Hampden-Sydney had a tough outing on Saturday as they took a hard fall to #2 Roanoke. The Maroons took the early offensive with a quick goal that was called back due to an illegal stick. Both teams battled for the next few minutes, but Roanoke struck again with a Pat March goal at the 11:58 mark. March wasn’t finished as he notched his second goal of the day just 20 seconds later. Over the next six minutes it was all Roanoke as they tacked on five more goals to give themselves a 7-0 lead before Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) put the Tigers on the scoreboard with just over four minutes to play in the first stanza. The Tigers felt a little spark after Mahoney’s goal as freshman Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) continued his hot streak tallying two goals of his own. Roanoke’s Trey Kelley responded for the Maroons, but with just two seconds to go before the horn Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) ripped a shot that beat Jake Dorsey to put the Tigers within four at the end of the first quarter. The Maroons added to their lead just nine seconds into the second quarter as Justin Tuma took the ball straight from the face-off to the goal. Jett would respond scoring his second, but Roanoke managed two more goals before Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored his first goal of the day. Before the end of the half, the Maroons again added to their lead scoring two more to give them a 13-6 halftime advantage. Though the third quarter started out rough for the Tigers, giving up four straight goals, they ended the quarter well scoring the next five goals. In the stretch, Jett added two, and Hawthorne, Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy), and Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) each notched one. Trailing 19-11, the Tigers struggled in the fourth quarter getting outscored 5-2 with Daniel Deck (Richmond, VA/Monacan) and Jett scoring for Hampden-Sydney. Jett led all scorers and had a solid outing with five goals and one assist. The Maroons dominated the statistical categories beating the Tigers in shots (59-37), groundballs (62-33), and face-offs (30-8). Junior Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) had 13 saves on the day. With the loss the Tigers fall to 4-6 on the year and 2-1 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney will return to action Wednesday, April 8 as they host Greensboro College at 4:00 pm. www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
