MOSS SNAGS SECOND POY HONOR, TIGERS SWEEP TENNIS AWARDS

SALEM, VA (April 21, 2008)–Hampden-Sydney College sophomore standout William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) notched his second Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s tennis Player of the Year award this weekend following a vote by the conference’s coaches.  Teammates Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Andrew McLeod (Mandeville, Jamaica/Manchester) were named the Rookie of the Year and ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively, and H-SC mentor Murrie Bates was tabbed the Coach of the Year.

Moss, who also earned the top rookie award in 2007, has yet to lose an ODAC regular season conference match.  In two seasons, Moss has put together identical 8-0 conference records, all at the No. 1 singles level.  In overall play, Moss went 11-2 in 2008 following a 12-1 showing last year.  Moss is currently ranked eighth in the South region by Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in singles, and is seventh in doubles with partner, Pugh.

Pugh went through the ODAC schedule nearly unscathed following an 8-1 ODAC season.  He is 15-2 overall, having gone 12-1 at No. 2 singles and 3-1 at No. 1 singles.  He is currently rated 19th regionally by the ITA in singles play.

McLeod boasts a 3.79 grade point average while double majoring in chemistry and economics/commerce.  He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa national honorary societies, and is a member of the Chi Beta Phi chemistry honor fraternity.  He was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team in 2007, and has been honored with the Hampden-Sydney John Jack Miller Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award and as a Hampden-Sydney Patrick Henry Scholar.  On the court, McLeod was honorable mention All-ODAC in 2007 and is a team co-captain.  He also lettered with the Tigers’ soccer team.

The all-conference voting was very successful for Hampden-Sydney. In addition to his Player of the Year award, Moss garnered first team All-ODAC recognition at No. 1 singles, Pugh a first team nod at No. 2 singles and McLeod second team honors at No. 6 singles. Tigers' freshman Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) was named first team all-conference at No. 4 singles with classmates Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill School) earning second team honors.
