TOP-TWO TENNIS TIGERS SNATCH ALL-STATE AWARDS

Sophomore William Moss named first team all-state; Pugh tabbed 2008 ROY

FERRUM, VA (July 2, 2008)–Hampden-Sydney head tennis coach Murrie Bates continues to pull top tennis talent into the gates, and those talented players continue to produce and earn recognition.

The Tennis Tigers' No. 1 and No. 2 players of 2008, sophomore William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and freshman Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) are the latest members of the Hampden-Sydney tennis program to earn Virginia Sports Information Directors' (VaSID) all-state honors. Moss, a two-time ODAC Player of the Year, secured his second consecutive first team all-state selection while running mate Pugh, the newly crowned ODAC Rookie of Year, duplicated his feat on the state level garnering VaSID Rookie of the Year honors to accompany his second team nod.

Moss has yet to drop an ODAC regular season conference match at the midway point of his collegiate career. In two seasons, Moss has put together identical 8-0 conference records, all at the No. 1 singles level. In overall play, Moss went 11-2 in 2008 following a 12-1 showing last year and finished the 2008 campaign ranked tenth in the Atlantic South region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in singles, despite sitting out the ODAC Tournament due to injury. Moss also completed the season ranked eighth in doubles alongside partner Pugh.

In his inaugural campaign, Pugh notched a 15-2 record at No. 2 singles and, with Moss, registered an unblemished 13-0 mark at No. 1 doubles for a 28-2 overall tally. Pugh's efforts earned him a spot on the VaSID second team among some of Virginia's top tennis veterans and made it two years in a row that a Tiger has secured the top rookie award.

Joining Moss on the first team was 2008 VaSID Player of the Year John Mook of Christopher Newport University, the University of Mary Washington's John James and Randy Loden, and Washington and Lee's Tim Ross and Nat Estes.

Pugh was accompanied on the second team by CNU's Eddie Glidewell, Mary Washington's Kaz Murata and Jason Dunn, Bridgewater's Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke, and UVA-Wise's Henning Kuich.

VaSID all-state teams are voted upon by active members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. For more information, please visit the VaSID site at http://www.ferrum.edu/athletics/vasid.
