TIGERS FARE WELL IN FALL ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP LEXINGTON, VA (September 14, 2008)–Despite not having two time ODAC player of the year William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and freshman Phillip Parrish (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman), the tennis Tigers had a successful weekend at the fall ODAC Championship hosted by Washington and Lee University. Hampden-Sydney had two players in the "A" Flight with 2008 ODAC Rookie of the Year Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and freshman Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin). Pugh would defeat Lynchburg's Daniel Civis with no problem winning 6-3 and 6-1. In the quarterfinals, however, Pugh fought hard against Washington and Lee's Jeremy Becht, but would ultimately fall 6-4 and 7-5. Despite taking a loss in the quarterfinals, Pugh bounced back and win the consolation bracket by defeating Washington and Lee's Jonathan Gaffney. Calhoun also made a successful run in the "A" Flight as he defeated Ben Blevins of Emory and Henry, Jonathan Gaffney of Washington and Lee, and Jon Roy of Roanoke. These three wins propelled Calhoun into the championship match against Washington and Lee's Jeremy Becht. Calhoun would be outmatched as he would take second place. The "B" Flight looked very similar for the Tigers as sophomore Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) was the runner up and freshman Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) swept the consolation bracket. Harrell easily handled opponents from Roanoke, Bridgewater, and Washington and Lee before ultimately falling to Washington and Lee's Ben Fass 7-5 and 6-2. Davis lost his first match, but rebounded quickly with two quality wins of 6-0; 6-0 and 6-1; 6-0. Sophomores Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint High School) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph Henry) were the two Tigers in the "C" Flight. Covington was able to complete the consolation sweep by winning out the "C" consolation bracket with a 6-3; 6-3 win over Emory and Henry's Mike Rogers. Pack also had a quality day coming in third place in the "C" Flight after overcoming Bridgewater's Teddy Callon 6-3 and 6-3. Pack reached the third place round by winning his first two rounds and falling to Washington and Lee representative Brian Roberts in the semifinals. Look for the Tigers to return to action this fall as they compete in the ITA Championship on October 4th and 5th in Fredericksburg, VA. www.hsc.edu/athletics |
