TIGERS COMPETE HARD IN ITA TOURNAMENT

FREDERICKSBURG, VA (October 4, 2008)–This past weekend the Tiger tennis team traveled to the University of Mary Washington to compete in their last match of the fall - the ITA Tournament. 2008 ODAC Rookie of the Year Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) had the best performance as he reached the sweet 16 in the championship event. Pugh did so by defeating his first opponent 6-2, 6-4 and his second round opponent 7-6 (2), 6-1. Pugh fought hard, but ultimately fell in the third round 6-4, 6-2, just missing the quarterfinal round.

Freshman Phillip Parrish (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) and sophomore Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) also competed in the championship event. Both Parrish and Harrell won their first round matches, but fell in the second round of play.

Freshman Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was the lone Tiger to compete in the "B2" event. Davis lost the first set 6-3, but put up an impressive battle in the second set. Unfortunately he was overcome and lost 7-6 (4).

Hampden-Sydney saw some more first round success in the "B3" and "B4" events. Sophomore Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph Henry) won his first round in the "B3" event convincingly 6-1,6-1. He would then battle in the second round but fall 7-6, 6-2.

Sophomore Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint High School) also had a first round win. He competed in the "B4" event, winning his first match 7-6, 6-2 before falling in the second round 6-2, 6-1.

Expect the Tigers to be working hard in the off season as they return to action this spring, opening at home against Greensboro College on February 27th at 3:00pm.
