MOSS WINS ODAC SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

LEXINGTON, VA (September 13, 2009)– Senior co-captain William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) defeated Hayden White of Washington and Lee in two sets to win the ODAC Singles Championship hosted by Washington and Lee University.  Moss did not compete in the event last year due to injury, but he has been victorious in all three of the years that he has participated.  Co-captain Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) claimed third place in the championship flight with a solid win in the playoff over Chip Wintringham of Emory and Henry.

The Tigers fared well all weekend with junior Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) winning the second flight consolation bracket, junior Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) winning the third flight consolation and senior Richie Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) claiming the fourth flight over fellow Tiger Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring)Michael Towne and Barrett Polan claimed the third and fourth positions.

Moss made quick work of his opponents, finishing with a 4-0 record without dropping a single set in the championship flight.  Pugh nearly reached the final to face Moss, dropping a tough three-setter to White of W&L 7-5, 3-6, (8-6).  He rebounded nicely in the third-place playoff to finish with a record of 3-1.

In the second flight, Covington won his first match by a score of 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 before falling in the quarterfinals.  His tournament wasn't over, however, and he responded by winning his final two matches to finish with a record of 3-1.

In third flight action, Pack won his first round matchup in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-1.  He lost a tight quarterfinal match by a tally of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, before rebounding to win the consolation bracket and finishing with a record of 2-1.

In the fourth flight, Holzapfel finished with a 3-1 ledger to take the consolation bracket, while Davis finished 2-2 to take the runner-up spot.

Look for the Tigers to return to action this fall as they compete in the ITA Regionals on October 3rd and 4th in Fredericksburg, VA.
