TIGERS COMPETE IN ITA INVITATIONAL

FREDERICKSBURG, VA (October 4, 2009)– Five members of the Hampden-Sydney tennis team competed this past weekend at the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Men's Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington. 

The Tigers turned in some very impressive efforts, with several successful results.  Sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) had an outstanding weekend, winning the B4 singles flight without dropping a set.  He saved his most impressive match for the championship, dropping Colin Jones of York College 6-0, 6-1.  Junior Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) also competed in the B4 singles flight, bowing out in the round of 16.     

In the championship flight, junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) scored an upset in the first round, knocking off number three overall seed James Muliawan of Carnegie Mellon.  In the second round, Pugh was leading 1 set to 0 against Haverford's Kevin Caulfield before having to retire with an injury.

In the B3 singles flight, junior Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) won his first round match against Daniel Rifkin of Muhlenberg by a score of 6-4, 6-0 before dropping a tight match in the quarterfinals to Kyle Lisco of Washington College in a second set tie-break. 

Junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) also had a very successful tournament, advancing all the way to the B1 singles flight championship match.  In the first round, Harrell knocked off Tom Griffiths of Swathmore 6-0, 6-4.  In the quarterfinals, he dropped Jeff Kamei from Johns Hopkins in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-1.  In the semifinals he topped Franklin & Marshall's Armen Vartan 7-6, 6-3, before falling to Aaron Ellison of Washington College in the championship match.
