Hampden-Sydney College welcomesNew York Timescolumnist Bret Stephens and Hollins University President Nancy Gray to speak at Commencement and Baccalaureate, respectively.
A seasoned journalist, Bret Stephens is an op-ed columnist and associate editor for theNew YorkTimes, a position he assumed in April 2017. Previously, Stephens wrote "Global View," the foreign-affairs column of theWall Street Journal,for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary in 2013. He was formerly theJournal's deputy editorial-page editor, responsible for the newspaper's global opinion section, and was a member of the editorial board.
Nancy Oliver Gray, an advocate for single sex colleges in higher education, became Hollins University's 11th president in January 2005. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Gray holds an M.Ed. from North Texas State University and has completed additional graduate work at Vanderbilt. She also received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Presbyterian College. She serves on many academic boards and is a strong believer in the liberal arts. Gray will retire at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year.
