Honors in English: Exploring and Other Stories
I saw the Honors experience as an opportunity to explore what writers of short fiction do by trying to write a manuscript. I wanted to understand more fully the process of writing a series of stories with the help of a creating writing teacher. I wanted to feel what it is like to be a writer, to feel a sense of satisfaction and failure with my work, and to try to create something of my own. My series, or novella, Exploring and Other Stories, is made up of six chapters, or individual stories, and examines the life of the twenty-two year old Pete as he grows up and loses his mother, Elizabeth, and Clare, the girl he's fallen in love with. The stories in the series are modern and are influenced by a number of modernist writers, including Chekov, Joyce, Hemingway, and Graham Greene, and more recent authors like Raymond Carver, Denis Johnson, Tobias Wolfe, T. C. Boyle, and A. L. Kennedy.
