The Beat-Bop Hipster: An Attitude for Stylistic Exploration, Individual Expression, and Artistic Innovation
I examined the stylistic similarities between Jack Kerouacís construction of narrative voice, dialogue, and musical sounds and Charlie Parkerís innovations in jazz improvisation. The innovative strategies employed by these artists have solidified their place in the traditions of jazz and literature, respectively. In a time when individuality and artistic innovation were not widely accepted, Kerouac turned outside of his own literary tradition for stylistic inspiration, and his manipulation of Parkerís improvisational technique creates a deeper stylistic relationship between the artistic mediums of jazz and literature.
