Plans to construct a new upperclassman residence hall complex at Hampden-Sydney College are moving ahead.

The Board of Trustees took major steps at its spring meeting to approve a proposed site plan and other aspects of the project.

The new complex, which will be positioned in the woods to the west of Whitehouse, will meld into the surrounding forest and incorporate beautiful views of Chalgrove Lake. In addition to the residence halls, the complex will feature a community building overlooking Chalgrove. The various elements of the complex will be linked by footpaths and a central area that harnesses the location’s natural beauty.

The dormitory spaces themselves will be apartment-style, with complete kitchens and other amenities for which upperclassmen have expressed interest. Current student leaders have been active in offering feedback throughout the process.

Tentative plans have the new complex being completed by the fall of 2020.
