Käthe Kollwitz Prints to be Exhibited at Atkinson Museum
On loan from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, twenty-seven prints by Prussian artist, Käthe Kollwitz, will open on September 1 at the Atkinson Museum.  The exhibition will remain on view through November 6. The Atkinson Museum of Hampden-Sydney College hosts the work of Josef Albers, pioneering twentieth-century artist/theorist and art educator. A Virginia Museum traveling exhibition, “Formulation: Articulation,” will open September 1 and run through October 13. A panel discussion, The Influence of Josef Albers on Contemporary Artists, is planned at the museum on September 11 at 4:30 p.m. Chaired by Mary Prevo, art historian at the College, the panel will include artists Beverly Rhoads, Associate Professor at Lynchburg College, and Ray Kleinlein, Visiting Assistant Professor of Fine Arts, Hampden-Sydney College. Then & Now: Buildings of Hampden-Sydney College
The exhibit features historic photographs of the buildings of Hampden-Sydney College compared to recent photographs from the same view. The passage of time is easily evident in the changing facades of the buildings and the grounds around them. Jamestown Archaeology Exhibit at Atkinson Museum
On loan from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the exhibition Uncovering Home: A Visual Essay on Jamestown Archaeology will open on Thursday, January 18, 2007, at the Atkinson Museum on the Hampden-Sydney College campus and will remain on view through February 10.  The exhibition contains twelve 22”x 30” panels that combine text and images. Beggars and Choosers
The Atkinson Museum at Hampden-Sydney College will host the exhibit, Beggars and Choosers: Motherhood is Not a Class Privilege in America, October 20 through December 12.  The exhibition, which includes about 50 pictures by many of this country’s most distinguished documentary photographers, deals with the social issues of being a mother and provides a perspective of motherhood among the poor and “resourceless.”Full Story...

Witnessing
On Tuesday, December 6th, the Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum at Hampden-Sydney College will host its first student-produced social documentary.  Unlike the annual student visual-arts show, which includes works associated with classroom courses, this documentary was produced over the course of this past summer. “Somewhere in La Mancha: Four-Hundred Years of Don Quixote,” an exhibition honoring one of the greatest literary figures of Spain, and father of the modern novel, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), will run concurrently with a six-week seminar in English for the 2005 Fall semester that will culminate in a two-day symposium and festival celebrating the 400th anniversary of Don Quixote (September 29 and 30). “The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci”
The Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum is proud to present, “The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci” donated to The Exhibition Alliance by the IBM Corporation and circulated by The Exhibition Alliance, Inc., Hamilton, New York.

The Esther Atkinson Museum will host an exhibition of the work of Margaret S. Watkins of Charlotte Court House. The exhibit, "Margaret S. Watkins: A Retrospective," features a selection of paintings created between her early childhood (c. 1935) to present day, ranging from oil portraits to pastels and paintings rendered entirely by palette knife. Object to Image: Recent Photographs by Pam Fox
Drawn from her firsthand observation of applied and experimental science, Fox’s photographs seek to illumine the connection between science and art. Her work delves into the sensuous associations between the machine and nature, combining antique scientific instruments and biological specimens. This exhibit is a unique display highlighting the intermediate level photography and drawing classes of Pamela P. Fox and Professor David D. Lewis of Hampden-Sydney College. The viewer can expect to see highlights of photo essay projects. Also on display will be digital photo collages and large-scale experimental photographic works.
