On
Saturday, October 25, the new Athletic Hall of Fame was dedicated.
The new gallery, part of the expansion and renovation of Gammon
Gymnasium, was made possible by a gift of Dr. Willette L. LeHew '57
of Norfolk, VA, and his family.
On Saturday morning, guests gathered and were able for the first time to view the Hall of Fame gallery. At 11:00 AM,
after brief remarks by Chairman of the Board Tom Allen and Hampden-Sydney President Walter Bortz
in which both
thanked Dr. LeHew
for his generous gift,
the ribbon was cut by Dr. LeHew (center), President Bortz, and Athletic Director Joe Bush.
Bill and Mary Louis LeHew are pictured with

veneer, by Mark H. Campbell, donated in honor of Dr. LeHew by
Mrs. LeHew and Mark Campbell.
The Hall of Fame Luncheon and induction of
four new members followed immediately in Snyder Hall, the renovated playing
area of Gammon Gymnasium.
At a dinner the preceding evening, October 24, Snyder Hall was
dedicated in honor of
Marine Corps Second Lieutenant Stephen Francis
Snyder '65 who was killed in action in Vietnam on August 24, 1966. For his selfless actions and bravery under fire, he was awarded the
Navy Cross.
Mr. Julious "Joey" P. Smith, Jr. ’65
of Richmond, VA, former
Hampden-Sydney College Trustee and fraternity brother, spoke of Steve and
the time they spent together at Hampden-Sydney. Smith led the
effort to raise the funds necessary to name Snyder Hall.
Glena
Kelso, sister of Steve Snyder, spoke of Steve and expressed the
thanks of the family for the honor paid her brother by
Hampden-Sydney.
Major General Gordon C. Nash ’71 (USMC Ret.) spoke
on behalf of the U. S. Marine Corps.
