Professor Brinkley Delivers Keynote Address
Professor Brinkley delivered the keynote address with a backdrop of the H-SC Memorial Gates originally built 82 years ago to honor the WWI veterans. Today the gates honor the Hampden-Sydney men who have died in wars ranging from the Revolution to Viet Nam.
Quoting from the Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address, Professor Brinkley gave war a practical meaning, that "we fight not to get power but to sow the seeds of freedom that we so cherish." And in the words of the Gettysburg Address, all those present for the ceremony could reaffirm "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
