Spring Break Fly Fishing in New Mexico
Beyond The Hill sponsored a trip during Spring Break 2007 to Navajo Dam, New Mexico to fly fish on the San Juan River. The group spent four days catching large brown and rainbow trout amidst beautiful desert scenery and snow covered hills. The trip was lead by Friend of the College Harry Robertson and assisted by Assistant Dean of Students Meade Whitaker ’99 and Dean of Students David Klein ’78. Students on the trip were John Boswell ’07, Dash Kelley ’07, Doug Vermilya ‘11 and Rob Lepczyk ‘11. Honduras Service Trip
After a 14 hour day of travel the 10 men representing Hampden-Sydney College reached their home for the next week, the Honduyate Marina on Lake Yojoa in Honduras. For the next week these men will work side by side with local Honduran volunteers, doctors, and pastors to build a medical clinic that will serve the villages and people around Lake Yojoa. Bill Irwin, who is the first and only blind person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, will share his humorous stories of adventure and mis-adventure. Bill was guided only by his dog Orient and his determination to hike from Georgia to Maine in one season. Mr. Irwin is also author of the book, Blind Courage.
