Club Visits Two Research Projects at Virginia Tech
Recently the Computer Science Club visited two of Virginia Tech's most renowned research projects. The club members left H-SC around eight o'clock in the morning for the central campus in Blacksburg, VA. We met Dr. Nicholas Polys, Director of Visualization of the CAVE system and Advanced Research Computing (ARC), on the third floor of Torgersen Hall where the CAVE is situated and where the development of the systems and images occur. The Gentlemen's Cup 2008
The completion of the freshman Honor Court elections marked the end of the second installment of the semester-long Gentleman’s Cup competition between freshman halls. This year’s winners were the men from the two lower floors of Cushing Hall, First Passage, who were organized under the supervision of their Resident Advisor, Jonathan Hunolt ’08. Pre-Law Society Visits the University of Richmond School of Law
On February 28, 2008 members of the Pre-Law Society visited the University of Richmond School of Law. We left Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 that morning and later met Everett Gardner, who graduated from Hampden-Sydney in 2007 and currently attends Richmond Law. The first part of the tour began in Everett’s environmental law class which, for many members of the Pre-Law Society, was their first experience in a real law school class. Full Story...

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration at Hampden- Sydney College took place with great spirit. On Monday, March 17, 2008 the campus community observed the College’s first-ever St. Patrick’s Day parade, which marched down College Road and Via Sacra. In college, students stress out about their social life, sports, and, most importantly, their academic work. Most students take out thousands of dollars in loans and defer the payments until after they graduate with the intention of doing well academically and getting a good job that will allow them to repay those loans. On the other hand, there are some students that come to college and are swept up in the social life, which often results in poor class performance. Whom do academically struggling students turn to when they need help? At Hampden-Sydney there is the Office of Academic Success and its director, Christa Fye. On Wednesday, November 1, 2006, the Spanish Club in association with the new International House threw Hampden- Sydney College’s first and very successful celebration of Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. This holiday is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and the Spanish Club members transformed the International House to show the festivity and liveliness of the Día de los Muertos with delicious food and exotic decorations.Full Story...

Film Festival A World Unseen

The opportunity to experience another culture can be moving and eye-opening. On Thursday night March 29th, the International Club and Film Club held a joint viewing of the critically acclaimed film Himalaya by French director Eric Valli in the Parents and Friends room. To open up the night, the members of the International Club cooked traditional meals from Nepal and India, such as curry chicken and momo’s (traditional Tibetan dumplings), to serve to all of the eager guests that came to watch the film.

Student Senate Makes Community Service a Priority
Like all democratic governments, student government at Hampden-Sydney College has three branches, the executive, judicial, and legislative. The legislative branch of the H-SC Student Government is the Student Senate, whose 12 members are elected by class.

The Senate’s most recent service project was putting together care packages with DVDs, cereal, gatorade and cool-aid mixes, pop-tarts, ramen noodles, pens, notepads, and envelopes for H-SC alumnus John Bradenham '05, who is on active duty in Iraq. Included in the package were also over 100 drawings expressing love and encouragement from Prince Edward County Elementary School students. Full Story...

On October 22nd, Professors Marc Hight (at right in battle gear) and Jonathan Keohane took some of their advisees, Bobby Lee Beck, Joshua Bohannon, Taylor Breckon, Ian Bridgman, Ivo Gyurovski, Lee Johnson, John Louis, Steele Parris, and Zach Smith, to play paintball at Paintball Authority in Powhatan,VA.  Dr. Hight, Elliott Assistant Professor of Philosophy, and Dr. Keohane, Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, team teach an Honors Course for freshmen.  Also along on the trip were Clark Chapman '07, a philosophy and religion major, and Joe Dunn '07, physics major.  For many it was their first time playing, but they caught on fast.
