The Wilson Center will host a cookout and open house during the family weekend football game, September 27, for students/staff in the
Wilson Center programs and their guests.
The Wilson Center will host an informal discussion on Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Nobel Prize-winning author whose books
chronicled the horrors of the Soviet gulag system. He died on August 3rd of this year at the age of 89. This informal discussion,
led by Dr. James F. Pontuso, Patterson Professor of Government and Foreign Affairs at H-SC, will take place on Wednesday,
September 17 at 4:15 PM in the Wilson Center front room. This is free and open to the public.
Reminder - On Monday, Sept. 29, the Wilson Center will host "Munich Revisited: The 70th Anniversary of the Munich Conference."
The speaker will be Dr. James Y. Simms, Jr., Elliott Professor of History and Director of the Military Leadership/National
Security Studies Program. The program will be held in Parents and Friends Lounge at 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public.
On Friday, October 10, the Wilson Center and Career Development will co-sponsor the annual Public Service Alumni Forum in Parents
& Friends Lounge at 4:00 PM. This year's topic is "Healthcare and the 2008 Election." The Wilson Center will have another
cookout and open house during the Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 11.
Sessions of the spring symposium, "Politics, Religion and Culture in Global Perspective" will be held on Tuesday March 17,
Thursday March 19, Thursday, March 26 2009 and Tuesday March 31, 2009. Dr. Williams Galston from the Brookings Institute, author of
a book on religion and politics in 21st Century American, will be the keynote speaker; the schedule is at the bottom of the newsletter.
Recent Events...
The Wilson Center hosted a successful pre-orientation leadership program for two dozen entering freshmen students on August 20-22.
Facilitators included Roger Barrus, John Eastby, Sam Wilson and Rucker Snead.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Wilson Center hosted a panel, "US Foreign Policy and National Security Challenges and the 2008 Presidential
Election," at Crawley Forum at 7:30 pm. Participating were Lt. General Samuel V. Wilson (USA ret), Major General Gary L.
Harrell (USA ret.), former Delta Commander., The Rev. Dr. Ben C. Mathes, founder and President of the organization, "Rivers of
the World" (http://www.row.org/default.htm). Gen. Boykin was called out of town and unable to participate as originally planned,
but the addition of Harrell and Mathes led to a thought-provoking evening for the 110 people in attendance.
Dr. David Marion, Director of the Wilson Leadership Center, continues his well-earned sabbatical during the fall semester. Dr.
Roger Barrus is serving as interim Director of the Center during his absence.

David L. Clegg '77 is the Deputy Commissioner of Employment Security for the state of NC.
Richard 'Rick' Broughton '95 left the US Department of Justice in August to accept a position at Wayne State University Law School
in Detroit.
Robert Skidmore '03, Public Service Program participant, won the Republican primary election for County Commissioner in District

Wesley Julian '08, a public service program graduate, is an Assistant Language Teacher at a Junior High in Osato, a town in Miyagi
Prefecture, 300 kilometers north of Tokyo. (See http://www.pref.miyagi.jp/english/index.htm ) Wesley has contracted for one year with
the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (http://www.jetprogramme.org/).
Trey Keeler '08 has been selected as one of three Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars to represent Rotary District 7600 (see
http://www.rotary7600.org/FoundationNewsletter.cfm). He will receive his country assignment in a few months and begin applying to
schools. Trey has been working as a paralegal at the Tiller Law Group since graduating from H-SC, and plans to attend law school.
