The Coleman Award has been established through a gift from Mr. Brian Coleman, a former assistant director of M15 and Officer of the
most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Coleman was also a participant in the 2004 "War
on Terrorism: Three Years After" conference.
The Coleman Award is presented to a graduating senior who has distinguished himself in the study of national security issues and
who has evidenced a desire to make a commitment to the advancement of American's national security interests.
The 2009 recipient, Andrew J. (A.J. Dalton, completed the Society of '91 Program in addition to the Military Leadership/National Security Studies
Program. He served as secretary for the College Republicans. He was also secretary of the Theta Chi Fraternity as well as marshal, overseeing all
the activities of new members. He also wrote an excellent senior research paper.
The 2008 recipient, David J. Grisdale, was a member of the Army ROTC Program and one of the top cadets in the University of Richmond
Spider Battalion for four years. As a freshman he received a Three Year Army ROTC Scholarship. He took advantage of various Army
summer training and leadership development opportunities to include Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA; the Northern Warfare School at Ft.
Greely, AK; and the Leadership Development and Assessment Course at Ft Lewis, WA and Drill Cadet Leadership Training at Ft Jackson, SC.
He is an Applied Mathematics major with a minor in Military Leadership and NationalSecurity Studies. Upon commissioning as a Second
Lieutenant in the Army at graduation, he reported to active duty to serve as a Platoon Tactical Officer at the Leadership Development
and Assessment Course at Ft Lewis, WA. with eventual placement as an armor platoon leader with the 1st Armored Division at Ft. Riley, KS.
The 2007 recipient, Ryan Alexander, transferred as a junior from the Virginia Military Institute. He was a leader in the
University of Richmond ROTC Program, culminating with service as the Cadet Battalion Commander his last semester. He served
in the VA National Guard for the three years as a member of Charlie Company, 1st of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th
Infantry Division. Upon commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army at graduation, he was to report to active duty for
training and eventual assignment as an infantry platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division.
The 2006 recipient, Michael Handlan, was also the recipient of the 2006 George C. Marshall ROTC Award as the top ROTC Cadet in
the University of Richmond ROTC Program. He served as the Cadet Battalion Commander, the first time a H-SC student has
been selected to serve in this position. He was also a four-year varsity football player, a member of the men's chorus, a graduate of
the Society of '91, ODK member, member of the campus fire department, member of ACS, and Secretary of the Tiger Athletic Club.
