PUBLIC SERVICE CERTIFICATE AWARD RECIPIENTS - 2008 |
The annual Wilson Center Awards dinner was held on April 18, 2008. It was, as usual, a high point of the year for the Wilson Center, a time
to recognize and honor the distinguished public service careers of two alumni,
one friend of the Center, and to award certificates of competion to the
seniors in both the Public Service and the
Military Leadership/National Securities Studies Certificate Programs. Both
leadership programs are now recognized as minors and are so noted on each participant's transcript.
The 2008 Public Service Program Certificate Recipients are pictured below, flanked by H-SC
President Walter M. Bortz III.

Left to right:Jeffrey M. "Mark" Eason, an Economics and Commerce major, with an additional minor in Spanish),
interned last summer in the Government Affairs Dept. of the National Taxpayers Union in Alexandria, VA. His research paper examined, "The
U.S. Tax Problem and the Move toward the Fair and Flat Tax." Mark plans to pursue a career in banking in North Carolina. (He served admirably
as head cook for the Wilson Center cookouts.)
Robert W. "Wesley" Julian, a double major in Religion and Political Science(magna cum laude,
interned at the USO Office in Norfolk, VA and completed a research project on the USO of Hampton Roads.
He plans either to teach English in Japan or continue working with the USO in Hampton Roads |

Left to right:Joseph T. "Trey" Keeler III,, a Political Science major, completed his internship in Brussels,
in the European Parliament office of a member of the British Conservative Party. His research paper focused on "British integration
into the European Union." Trey plans to work for a year and then go to law school.
Phillip G. "Phil" Miskovic, a major in Religion with an additional minor in Rhetoric (Honors in Religion), interned with in the Department of Education,
Washington, D.C. in the Faith Based Initiative Office. His research examined the President's Center for Faith-Based and Community
Initiatives. He recently completed a Religion Departmental Honors project entitled, "'To Form Good Men and Good Citizens': The Hampden-
Sydney Religion." After working for a couple of years, Phil plans to go to law school.

Left to right:
Martin R. Sullivan, Jr., a Political Science major, interned at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Savannah, GA. He
researched "The Minimum Wage Debate in America." His research paper involved an in-depth study of civic engagement in Savannah.
After graduation, Martin plans to get involved in local elections in Georgia.
Edward W. Ware IV, a History major, interned with the Jackson Hole Land Trust, a nonprofit organization that oversees land and conservation
easements in Jackson Hole, WY. His research focused on, "Sustainable Development in the Western Carolinas." He plans to pursue a position in the
commercial preservation field.

Joseph L. "Joe" Farmer, a history and economics major (magna cum laude), interned last summer with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
His research paper focused on the, "Sub-prime Mortgage Crisis." Joe plans to take a seasonal position in Wyoming after he graduates
and then move into the commercial sector.
