Throughout their day on the Hill, Scouts had the opportunity to earn up to two merit badges by taking courses in subjects such as archaeology, astronomy, bird study, chemistry, citizenship in the nation and world, disc golf, emergency preparedness, fly fishing, gardening, law, robotics, swimming, theater, and many others. Hampden-Sydney students, faculty, and staff contributed their expertise and helped facilitate the Scouts’ progress toward earning merit badges.
“The Merit Badge College Day is a win-win for both the Scouts and the College,” says Director of High Adventure Scott Schmolesky. “We aim to offer badges that showcase what makes Hampden-Sydney special. This year, one standout was the archaeology badge—Scouts had the uncommon opportunity to work alongside archaeologist Charles Pearson, learning how to survey, excavate, document, and interpret artifacts at an active archaeological site. Others earned the entrepreneurship badge, learning directly from Michele King, director of the Flemming Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. These kinds of experiences are uncommon, and we’re excited to build on them in the future.”
While on campus, Scouts fully immersed themselves in earning merit badges, taking advantage of Hampden-Sydney’s resources and gaining a firsthand glimpse into college life. The day served as a clear example of the College’s dedication to character development and created an environment where meaningful learning could thrive.
“As the coordinator, it's pretty fun to see the day unfold.” Schmolesky says. “In addition, it’s really great to see our students providing valuable mentorship to the Scouts through various hands-on experiences.”
By continuing to welcome Scouts to campus, Hampden-Sydney reaffirms its enduring commitment to learning, leadership, and the outdoors—values deeply shared by members of the College community. The College honors these values by offering the Eagle Scout Scholarship to every Eagle Scout who enrolls. The $30,000 annual scholarship recognizes and celebrates the hard work, character, and civic spirit of Scouts, who are ready to lead with purpose on the Hill and beyond.
