Fall Semester Parent Sessions

Recognizing that you want to be involved in your son's college experience, we'll be hosting information sessions for parents not only during Family Weekend, but also throughout the fall semester.

What is the Ferguson Career Center?

Saturday, September 8, 9:30-10:15 AM
Saturday, September 15, 9:30-10:15 AM
Friday, September 28, 3:30-4:00 PM

As an excellent centerpiece for all that students are learning and doing on campus, the Ferguson Career Center offers a wide range of services from Career Strategy/Resume Development to Networking, Interview Preparation and Salary Negotiation. This session will highlight what parents can do to support their student for what's ahead, while providing salary data, industry timelines, and how students can prepare for our H-SC Career Fair on September 27th. Parents who would like to connect the Ferguson Career Center to their employer for internships/full-time positions can contact Stephanie Joynes at sjoynes@hsc.edu or register as an employer contact on Handshake.

Preparing men of character for lives of consequence

Friday, September 28, 3:30-4:00 PM

Hampden-Sydney prepares men to be leaders. Our students are given opportunities to explore, practice, and hone their leadership skills so they can go on to become tomorrow's CEOs, business founders, military officers, college presidents, and civic and political leaders. The Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest hosts lectures, forums, symposia, and excursions that help develop effective and ethical leaders. With direction from current and former leaders, students gain an understanding of the challenges confronting the United States and the world.

What was he thinking?!

Saturday, September 29, 10:30-11:15 AM

Using Francis Jensen, MD's bestselling book 'The Teenage Brain' as a foundation, faculty from Hampden-Sydney College's Department of Psychology will discuss students' cognitive and emotional development across the college years. This session is designed to educate parents on brain functioning and development and help them to understand how the challenges that confront college students, including disrupted sleep, drug and alcohol use, stress, sport and concussions, and emerging mental illness can interact with and impact these changes. This session will also help parents to learn about those resources and interventions that are available to and recommended for students to help them to navigate this challenging developmental period.
