Following the postponement of May Commencement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hampden-Sydney will now hold Commencement on Homecoming weekend, October 23 & 24.

We look forward to seeing family and friends at this weekend-long celebration. Here you will find all you need to know to make your plans.

At this time, we know that Baccalaureate and a reception will be held Friday evening, October 23rd, and Commencement will occur at 9am on Saturday, October 24th. A complete revised commencement schedule will be available as soon as it is possible.

Plan Your Visit

If you cannot attend the Commencement exercises on October 23 and 24, you will be welcome to participate in the Commencement exercises for the members of the Class of 2021 next May, or another of our future Commencement exercises.


Will you or someone you know be unable to attend Commencement in person? Hampden-Sydney will live-stream the ceremony for you to enjoy from where you are.

Ordering Announcements

Announcements can be ordered on the Balfour website. Simply enter your location and school, and choose your preference. In addition to formal announcements, you may choose to order personalized stationary, thank you notes, and other printed items.

Traffic And Parking Information

Parking will be directed by Campus Police and event staff.

Handicapped Parking And Special Services

On Saturday, the College will provide student-driven golf cars to transport guests with mobility issues to the Commencement Ceremony and parking areas.

Handicapped parking is available immediately behind Venable Hall.

Inclement Weather

Annual Pronouncement Of Weather

"...And there shall be no rain."

However, if we do have an accidental shower that does not stop, the rain locations are as follows:

  • Baccalaureate Service: Kirby Field House
  • Senior Reception: Snyder Hall, Kirk Athletic Center
  • Commencement Ceremony: Kirby Field House
  • Commencement Lunch: Pannill Commons

Personal Photography

Parents are encouraged to photograph their graduate under the following guidelines:

  • Prior to the procession near the Bell Tower
  • During the procession from the left or right of the sidewalk
    (No one will be permitted in the path of the procession)
  • As the graduate exits the stage, there is a small space to the right for this purpose. Please be mindful of others trying to do the same.

Obligations of Seniors

Business Office
Students must have all financial obligations settled with the College before they may receive their diploma or have transcripts released. Please contact the Business Office at (434) 223-6223 if you have any questions regarding financial obligations.

Room Check-Out and Key Return
Seniors should make an appointment with their RA to complete official room check-out. Rooms should be clean and free of debris or personal property. Failure to check-out of the room with the RA will result in a $50 fine in addition to any charges for debris or damage.

All College-owned student residences will be closed, locked, and vacated at 7 PM, Saturday, May 9. Keys must be returned to Buildings & Grounds by 7:30 PM.
