Office of Culture and Community
The Office of Culture and Community serves as the campus hub for belonging, mentorship, and community engagement at Hampden-Sydney College. Located in the Brown Student Center, the Office welcomes students during open office hours, by appointment, or anytime in the Empowerment Student Lounge.
HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm
The Office of Culture and Community fosters a campus culture that reflects the high ideals of the College's mission and codes of honor and conduct. It builds belonging by equipping students to form meaningful relationships to strengthen the brotherhood across every background, invests in every student's development through first-year mentorship, and advocates for and empowers young men throughout their four years and beyond, extending the College's mission of forming good men and good citizens into the schools and communities of Virginia.
The Office of Culture and Community Supports:
- The Man-to-Man Project, which pairs every first-year student with an upperclassman mentor,
- Emerging Leaders in Transition to Excellence (ELITE), the College's college-preparation and personal development partnership with regional high schools including a free residential Summer Bridge overnight camp,
- Minority Student Union Alumni Weekend (MAM Weekend), and
- Title IX, ADA and Section 504, and harassment and discrimination support, providing every student a place to understand his rights and options with dignity and without pressure.
More About the Programs
The Man-to-Man Project pairs every first-year student with an upperclassman mentor hand-selected by a faculty and staff committee. Through mentorship, peer-to-peer character development sessions, academic coaching, and leadership training, first-year students build the relationships and habits that carry them through Hampden-Sydney and beyond. As students progress, they are encouraged to become mentors themselves. Upperclassmen interested in serving as mentors may apply below.

Through ELITE (Emerging Leaders in Transition to Excellence), Hampden-Sydney partners with high schools across Virginia to provide
- ELITE Pre-College, a college preparation and readiness through sustainable, culturally -grounded mentorship. College staff and trained student mentors work with young men during the school day at partner schools at no cost to schools or families.
- ELITE Summer Bridge welcomes students to campus each summer for a free residential week of college-level instruction and campus life. Families interested in ELITE should contact their school counselor or principal; school divisions interested in partnership are invited to contact the Office.
- ELITE Scholars, a last-dollar scholarship opportunity providing professional and personal development for PELL-eligible students who have participated in Pre-College and/or Summer Bridge

The Minority Student Union Alumni Weekend brings alumni back to the Hill each spring for a weekend of mentorship, networking, and brotherhood with current and prospective students. The weekend includes panel discussions, the annual alumni-student basketball game, and a formal dinner, and is planned in partnership with the Office's Alumni Advisory Committee.

Strong partnerships in Farmville, Prince Edward County, and the surrounding region are central to the College's commitment to forming good men and good citizens. The Office of Culture and Community coordinates the College's work with community organizations including the Robert Russa Moton Museum, Sandy River Distillery, North Street Press Club, and the public school divisions of the region. Community organizations interested in partnering with Hampden-Sydney students are invited to contact the Office.

The Office of Culture and Community provides support and resources for students navigating concerns related to Title IX, ADA and Section 504 accommodations, and harassment and discrimination. Any student may request an intake meeting to learn about his options; requesting a meeting does not commit a student to filing a formal complaint. Supportive measures — including academic, housing, and schedule accommodations — are available regardless of whether a formal process is pursued. Students may bring an advisor or support person of their choosing to any meeting. SafeZone trainings are offered throughout the year for students, faculty, and staff.

The IAC is made up of faculty, student, and staff representatives for the purpose of facilitating discussion of issues related to belonging and campus culture. The Committee provides a campus forum for the discussion of intercultural issues, programs, and opportunities; identifies student needs and provides institutional support; and sponsors on-campus programs that prepare all students for a changing world.
