Instrumental methods are introduced early in the curriculum, and these methods are reinforced through routine use in the project-based lab sequence. For example, first-semester freshmen use Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy to determine percent metal in coordination compounds they have made, and in the spring of the freshmen year students learn how to use our 400 MHz nmr and our Ft-IR spectrometers.
