Dr. Schueller's research interests are in Roman archaeology, architecture, and urbanism, and he focuses on the ancient regions of Macedonia and Thrace between the 2nd cent. BCE and the 4th century CE. Themes in his research include cross-cultural dialogue, the effects of imperialism on communities, and reusing old monuments in response to socio-economic change. Dr. Schueller's ongoing research particularly addresses how Roman public entertainment venues shaped ideas, spaces, and artifacts for urban life through multivalent interactions among spectators and performers. He has helped to lead several excavations coordinated by the Balkan Heritage Foundation in North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Montenegro and has excavated in Israel as well.
