September 23, 2025

Reverend Tim Verhey headshotHampden-Sydney College and College Presbyterian Church are pleased to announce and welcome Reverend Doctor Timothy Allen Verhey as the next pastor of College Church and College chaplain.

Dr. Verhey is an accomplished theologian, ethicist, pastor, professor, and administrator. Born and raised in western Michigan, he graduated with a B.A. from Hope College in Holland, Michigan; an M.Div. from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia; and a Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta.

Dr. Verhey has served as an ordained pastor and supply pastor of presbyterian churches and has held numerous roles within the church and the greater presbyteries in which he resided—both Coastal Carolina and Charlotte—in North Carolina. During the last 11 years, he served as assistant professor of religious studies and philosophy and then as dean of students at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina, where he remained until last May when the university closed amid financial hardship.

Among Dr. Verhey’s references, he was described as “quite an amazing guy, engaging, gregarious, a very positive team builder, and beloved in the community.” He was noted for having “a pastoral spirit and a pastoral heart,” and for being “as passionate about his ministry as he is about the academic program.”

“We are all thrilled to welcome Dr. Verhey as our next pastor and chaplain,” said Richard Pantele ’13, dean of students. “Dr. Verhey is extraordinarily accomplished and brings a contagious enthusiasm for working with students and community. As we seek to enhance the spiritual life of all of our students, I have every confidence that Dr. Verhey’s passion for and prior experience with this work will enrich student life at the College in long-lasting and meaningful ways.”

The College and College Church are grateful to the members of the Pastor Nominating Committee—Anita Garland, chair; Dean Pantele; Ken Perkins; Lucy Carter Smith; Molly Terry; Joseph Weinstein ’27; and Owen Williams ’26, president of the Student Government—for their work in selecting the next pastor of College Church and College chaplain.
