This May, Hampden-Sydney College proudly welcomed alumni back to the Hill for the annual Patrick Henry Society Reunion, a celebration marked by fellowship, reflection, and the enduring bonds of brotherhood that have defined the College for generations. The Patrick Henry Society consists of all alumni who have reached the milestone of celebrating their 50th class reunion. Set against the backdrop of the College’s 250th anniversary, this year’s reunion carried a particularly meaningful spirit as alumni gathered to honor both the institution’s remarkable history and the men who have shaped it—and in turn been shaped by it.
The weekend’s highlight was the induction of over 40 members of the Class of 1976 into the Patrick Henry Society. Surrounded by classmates, family, and fellow alumni, members of the class reflected on five decades of friendship, service, and connection to the College. Their induction represented not only the passage of time but also the continuation of a lifelong commitment to Hampden-Sydney and to one another.
The class of 1976 has demonstrated extraordinary devotion to Hampden-Sydney throughout their lives, contributing a remarkable combined total of $3,214,326 to the College. Before reunion, the Class of 1976 Scholarship stood at $39,955. Inspired by gratitude for the education and brotherhood they experienced on the Hill, classmates rallied together to elevate the scholarship to an impressive $339,965. Their generosity will open doors for future generations of Hampden-Sydney men, ensuring that young scholars for years to come can benefit from the same transformative experience that shaped the lives of the class of 1976.
Throughout the reunion, campus came alive with stories shared across generations. Alumni reconnected along familiar pathways, revisited treasured campus landmarks, and gathered for conversations that bridged decades of Hampden-Sydney history. From memories within the classroom, tales of campus tradition, and the highlights of their four years within thegates, the weekend served as a reminder that while the College continues to grow and evolve, its defining characteristics remain unchanged.
As Tom Ebel, chair of the Class of 1976 Reunion Committee, remarked, “While we perhaps have fulfilled some of what was expected of our esteemed class, I expect that the 2026 class is far more talented and better prepared than we were. This reflects the great progress the school has made since we left. While keeping its eyes on the same mission, it is stronger and better than when we graduated.”
As their return coincided with the celebration of our 250th anniversary, the Class of 1976 had a unique privilege of processing during commencement with the 250th graduating class of Hampden-Sydney. This was especially monumental as the 1976 alumni were the 200th class to walk across the stage, marking their own piece of history 50 years ago.
For many attendees, the most meaningful moments were the simplest ones: old friends reuniting over dinner, laughter echoing through familiar halls, and the shared understanding that Hampden-Sydney remains a place unlike any other. The Patrick Henry Society Reunion once again demonstrated that while years may pass, the bonds forged on the Hill endure for a lifetime.
