"I look back now, almost 20 years ago, and still find useful the problem solving skills you all taught us. The exposure to each professor's research styles and experiences combined with the independent projects in our junior and senior years gave us the foundational experiences that were matured in graduate school and in our professional lives that make us successful today."

Dr. D. Keith Williams
Senior Analyzer Engineer, ExxonMobil

After graduating with a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from North Carolina State University, Dr. Williams was hired by ExxonMobil, where he is currently a Senior Analyzer Engineer.  His job involves designing sample systems and choosing the proper online analysis systems (IR, GC, etc.) for a range of applications from product certification and process control to safety and environmental monitoring.

"The Chemistry Department at Hampden-Sydney helped to create and develop my interest in chemical instrumentation through the hands on experience I received as a student.  The faculty was very supportive and always willing to answer questions, whether they related to class work or not.  My time at Hampden-Sydney, specifically the Chemistry Department, prepared me to be successful in graduate school and in my career."

Dr. Stephen Diegelmann
Postdoctoral Fellow, Case Western Reserve University

After graduating from Johns Hopkins University in July 2011 with a PhD in chemistry, Dr. Diegelmann took a postdoctoral research position at Case Western Reserve University where he works in Dr. Stuart Rowan's lab in the department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering on new polymer-nanomaterial composites with switchable mechanical properties. His plan is to obtain an academic position at a primarily undergraduate institutions similar to HSC.

"The chemistry department at Hampden-Sydney provides a unique scientific education that is unmatched by any of the larger chemistry departments around the country.  Students at HSC do not simply follow procedures out of a manual that are expected to work, but are guided through semester long projects that teach critical thinking, problem solving, and the full scientific process.  My time in the HSC chemistry department fully prepared me for the intensity of graduate school, both in the class room and in the lab, and helped me excel at being an independent scientist."

Dr. Anderson Marsh
Associate Professor of Chemistry
Lebanon Valley College

Dr. Marsh Received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.  He teaches Physical and General Chemistry lecture and lab courses and supervises students during the summer and academic years on independent research projects at Lebanon Valley College.  He is active in the American Chemical Society at the local level as Webmaster for the Southeastern PA section and at the national level on two exam committees.

"My experience at HSC with both the Rhetoric and Chemistry Advanced Lab courses helped me become a better (and faster) writer, which has enabled me to publish peer-reviewed manuscripts more easily, as well as obtain grant money for my research projects.  The Chemistry lab courses showed me how to design and carry out experiments, two skills that I rely on when teaching my own lab courses and planning student research projects.  The Friday afternoon seminars played an important role in my learning how to give an oral presentation, which I do at ACS meetings when I attend and which I teach my students completing senior independent research projects."

Dr. Wade Johnson
Associate Professor and Chair of Department,  Susquehanna University

Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Iowa State University. Currently, he is a tenured faculty member and Chair of the Chemistry Department at Susquehanna University.

"I was drawn to Hampden-Sydney's rhetoric program in addition to the chemistry department. Acknowledging that my writing skills were subpar out of high school, I took full advantage of rigorous rhetoric program. The chemistry department's unique research  based advanced lab system made the transition to a graduate program much easier."
