The Hurt Scholarship was established by W. Glenn Hurt ’60 and awards $10,000 to talented prospective students interested in the sciences. The number of available scholarships may vary each year.
Before his passing in 2021, Dr. Hurt made an extraordinary gift that established the Hurt Science Scholars Program, which will give aspiring scientists increased access to a Hampden-Sydney education by providing this annual scholarship. Each Hurt Science Scholar will also have funding through this scholarship program to engage in research opportunities for two summers.
A longtime professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School, Dr. Hurt was passionate about the sciences and the cultivation of scientific practitioners, mentoring many young Hampden-Sydney alumni through medical school and into the medical profession. Dr. Hurt’s act of extraordinary generosity is characteristic of his lifelong commitment to Hampden-Sydney College.
The Hurt Scholarship Competition is an exclusive opportunity for students interested in pursuing studies in the sciences to compete for an additional scholarship award. Held alongside our Top Scholarship Competitions the day before Admitted Student Day, the competition is open by invitation only to students who have been awarded the Birthplace Scholarship. The Hurt Scholarship, if awarded, is added to the student’s initial scholarship award.
