Hampden-Sydney’s Lambda Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK)—a national leadership honor society—received a 2023 Maurice Clay Leadership Development grant.

According to the ODK website, Clay Grants are awarded to circles who seek to provide leadership and personal development opportunities on their campus through the circle.

The Lambda Circle will use the grant for the development of a workshop called “Developing Leadership in STEM” that will take place in the fall of 2023. The program will aim to bring together students and faculty in the STEM disciplines to consider how to promote the practice of effective student leadership in the sciences.

Lambda Circle Advisor Mike Wolyniak says, “Leadership is often solely considered in political terms, but ODK wants to provide opportunities at H-SC for all students to explore leadership in all of its forms.  This workshop will expand our leadership training repertoire and will be a nice complement to the work we started a couple years ago with our workshop on civil communication in the H-SC community.”

This is the second Clay Grant that the Lambda Circle has received. The first, in 2021, supported a workshop titled “Leadership Through Effective and Civil Communication” that brought together underclassman student leaders with faculty and staff stakeholders to consider how to consider diverse viewpoints and practice empathetic listening in becoming leaders that are effective for all constituents.
