Hampden-Sydney College offers an unparalleled and diverse outdoor education program, and the shooting sports are no exception. What began decades ago as a small group of students interested in the shooting sports has grown into a premier, highly organized, and nationally recognized competitive team. The College began offering competitive shooting in 2021, and in 2026 Hampden-Sydney celebrated the grand opening of the state-of-the-art Hampden-Sydney Shooting Sports Academy. Designed by world-renowned expert, Rick Hemmingway, the Shooting Sports Academy is located near campus at historic Slate Hill, the original location of the College’s founding in 1775.
The College’s shooting program offers entering students an opportunity to continue in the sport or even compete at the national collegiate level. A popular offering at Hampden-Sydney, Shooting Team tryouts recently drew more than 50 students competing for spots on the team. But students are not the only members of the community to enjoy the facility. Alumni, parents, and friends enjoy the facility at events like Alumni Weekend, Parents Weekend, and Homecoming.
