The requirement for a major in Visual Arts is a minimum of 34 hours, to include: Visual Arts 301 (Contemporary Art), three additional Art History Courses, six Studio Art courses, including one at the 300-level or above, and Visual Arts 498 (Pre-Thesis) and Visual Arts 499 (Thesis). Philosophy 218 or Religion 305 may be counted as one of the Art History Courses. Theater 401 may be counted as one of the Studio Art courses. Note: Visual Arts 360 and 361 are courses that may be taken more than once for credit, as the topic rotates.
Students interested in majoring in the Visual Arts should meet with the Visual Arts faculty before or during their sophomore year to devise a course of study. They are strongly encouraged to complete VISU 220 before the end of their sophomore year and VISU 200 and VISU 202 before the end of their junior year. The Visual Arts Division of the Fine Arts Department must approve Visual Arts courses taken at other institutions and presented for major credit.
The requirement for a minor in the Visual Arts is five classes, including at least one Art History course, one Studio Art course, and one 300-level course. Religion 305 may be counted as an Art History course.
Students interested in going into arts management may want to consider Economics 101 as the prerequisite for the following helpful courses: Business 222, 231, or 241.
