Hampden-Sydney equips students with the skills and connections needed to launch successful careers in financial services. These hyper-competitive industries demand strong academic achievement, sharp attention to detail, and proactive engagement with industry leaders. Through our rigorous curriculum and hands-on experiences like TigerFund portfolio management, students develop both technical expertise and professional networks essential for success.
Banking & Finance
Although Hampden-Sydney students have successfully entered Banking & Finance from a range of academic backgrounds, the most common pathways are through one of three majors: Economics, Economics & Business, or Mathematical Economics. The Banking & Finance track aims to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that offers broad industry exposure while emphasizing essential principles. The academic offerings include courses in financial analysis, Austrian theory, econometrics, and more.
Outside of the classroom, students have many opportunities to advance themselves on the Banking & Finance track. The Tiger Fund is a student operated equities portfolio that manages an allocated portion of the College’s endowment. The Center for the Study of Political Economy (CSPE) is a co-curricular offering to immerse students in the study and practice of classical liberal thought. Additionally, the Investment Banking Club and Pre-Business Society are student organizations that seek to provide students with exclusive networking events and professional workshops.
Internship opportunities allow students to gain valuable exposure to the Banking and Finance track, often leading to post-graduate employment offers. Students have interned with a variety of prominent organizations, including:
- J.P. Morgan
- Nasdaq
- Citibank
- BNP Paribas
- First Citizens
- Wells Fargo
- Discovery Capital Management
- UBS
- Townebank
Students who pursue the Banking & Finance track will be equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in their careers. Recent graduates have accepted positions such as investment banking analysts, financial advisors, private equity associates, corporate finance professionals, and risk management consultants across top firms in banking, consulting, and fintech. Banking & Finance careers have led Hampden-Sydney alumni to New York City, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Richmond
