The Classics Department offers two majors and three minors. The majors are Classics and Ancient Languages (with concentrations in Greek, Latin, or Greek and Latin) and Classical Studies. The minors are in Greek, Latin, or Classical Studies. The same courses may not be used to fulfill more than one departmental major or minor.
The requirements for a major in Classical Studies are at least 30 hours, including at least 6 hours of Greek or Latin above the 100-level; one 300-level CLAS course; CLAS 470 (3-hour capstone course); and one 200-level CLAS course from each of the following three categories: “Classical Words” (CLAS 201, 203, 204, 211, 212); “Classical Worlds” (CLAS 207, 208, 209, 210, 218, 219); and “Classical Receptions” (CLAS 202, 215, 216). The remaining hours may be selected from additional courses in Greek and Latin at the 200-level or above; any Classical Studies (CLAS) course; Visual Arts 204; Philosophy 210; and Politics 310.
The requirements for a major in Classics and Ancient Languages are at least 30 hours, including at least 12 credits above the 100-level in the chosen language concentration (majors with a concentration in Greek and Latin must fulfill this requirement for both languages); one 300-level CLAS course; CLAS 470 (3- hour capstone course); and one 200-level CLAS course from each of the following three categories: “Classical Words” (CLAS 201, 203, 204, 211, 212); “Classical Worlds” (CLAS 207, 208, 209, 210, 218, 219); and “Classical Receptions” (CLAS 202, 215, 216). The remaining hours may be selected from courses in Greek and Latin at the 200-level or above; any Classical Studies (CLAS) course; Visual Arts 204; Philosophy 210; and Politics 310.
A minor in Classical Studies requires 18 hours, at least 3 of which must be at the 300-level or above. Students may select from the following: any courses in Classical Studies; Visual Arts 204; Philosophy 210; and Politics 310. Greek or Latin courses at the 200-level and above may also apply toward the 18-hour requirement, but this minor does not require language courses.
A minor in Greek or Latin requires 18 hours, including at least 6 hours in the language at the 300-level or above. The remaining 12 hours may be selected from the following: courses in Greek or Latin (if they are in the language used to satisfy the language portion of the minor they must be at the 300-level or above); courses in Classical Studies; Visual Arts 204; Philosophy 210; and Politics 310.
